Artist’s Statement
My work translates images derived from ink blots into intricate and labor intensive drawings, paintings, and sewn felt pieces. These forms suggest a multitude of representations, playing with and against the human instinct to pull the identifiable from the abstract to make visible a condition in which clear identification or categorization is evaded. I am interested in the kind of incidental color that might result from genetic patterns or hallucinatory states, overlaying notions of the “natural”, “unnatural”, and “artificial”. Recently I have been using digital imaging to produce more “irrational” color that is then re-translated into a new drawing or painting.
