About the Exhibition:

Essence

In her MFA Thesis, Jane Liang discusses how clothing represents an essential part of our selves. We are not defined by what we wear, but what we wear becomes part of our essence. The clothing in the paintings represents different phases of our selves. Clothing can be sensual, sexual, decorative, cultural, practical, or poetic. Some images describe an aspect of a body or a self. The body intimately interacts with the clothes in a way that represents an emotion. Some images show how we are identified. They show the texture, the color, and the designs of how we represent our selves. These try to represent some essence of who we are and what we do.

E Pluribus Unum

With this series of drawings, Lee Peterson is interested in the immediate associations made when introduced to the familiar. The names of Famous/Infamous figures from politics, ephemeral media headlines, and entertainment serve as the fodder for recognition. However, the viewer is not met with the recognizable figure associated with the familiar name. Instead, what is provided is a pathetically sweet reinterpretation of an anonymous, but real, civilian’s likeness – who seemingly has nothing in common with the well-known personality other than sharing a name. The source material for these portraits are appropriated from mugshots, Facebook profile photos, etc. Not only do these pieces question the line between fame and anonymity, but primarily serve to make the insignificant become significant. Truly an antithesis to PopArt, these figures greet the viewer with longing to matter. This body of work represents Peterson’s MFA Thesis exhibition.

IRL (In Real Life)

The exhibition IRL (in real life) will present the thesis research of Jimmy James Canales. The research revolves around the exploration of two performance art realities: the physical IRL (in real life) reality and on-line reality. For the exhibition Canales will physically live in the gallery space for the duration of the exhibit, approximately 3 weeks. During this survival situation he will present at least one new performance everyday, upload documentation online and construct ephemera installations. The show will blur the line between performance art and real life exploring the complex relationships with current technologies.

Splice

Jamie Garrison explores genetically modified organisms and their affect on the natural environment. Acting as a tinkerer, she splices technological mechanisms with biological life forms, creating hybrid creatures. Her creatures, then, both elude to human nature’s desire to alter nature’s design and the techno-landscapes that continually confront and question man’s perception of what the natural is. This body of work, Splice, is Garrison’s MFA Thesis.

Entrance Before Exit is an exhibition of the works of Michael Henderson, Robin Germany, and Beth Thomas exploring the potential of the “entrance”. Using painting, drawing, video, photography and ceramics, each artist investigates the “threshold” as a pause, in which one considers the space before him/her, with a mix of fear and excitement, curiosity and bravado. At the entrance, one establishes expectations about what lies beyond, and one might project oneself into the space as a way of experiencing it without actually entering. The entrance is a space of tension, change, and decision, guided by spiritual and intellectual desire.

Laura Anderson Barbata, Autorretrato, mechanical plastic bird, paper and wire, 5″ x 17″ x 9″, 2001

“Tal Palo Tal Astilla – Artists Influenced by La Cultura” presents the work of contemporary artists on both sides of the U.S. and Mexico border. “Tal Palo Tal Astilla,” roughly translated to “Like Father Like Son,” seeks to highlight the similarities between these people that geographical borders and boundaries seek to diminish.

The artists in this exhibition share conceptual, aesthetic, and ethnic lineage with Mexico. These ties should not be simply defined as Mexico is, and has been, a very diverse culture influenced by Native people, European conquests, slavery, and people fleeing religious and political persecution. This history informs the unique identities of these artists, and they draw from this history to produce work that is compelling, current, and insightful. “Tal Palo Tal Astilla” focuses on notions of identity through the language of portraiture.

Laura Anderson Barbata’s video work and sculpture draws inspiration from spiritually charged religious icons, historical text of indigenous origins, and personal narratives.

Ana Fernandez paints symbolic and mystically poetic portraits of inanimate objects, such as homes and vehicles, which serve as surrogates for their owners. They are regionally specific to the contemporary time but are broad in their appeal.

Rigoberto Gonzalez paints portraits and still-life works that mix political and contemporary subjects and contain complex visual vocabulary with old master sensibility.

This exhibition is supported in part by the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation of 1992.

When: The exhibition will run from January 23-March 1, 2013. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10-4; Saturday 1-4; Closed Sun/Mon and by appointment. Exhibitions are free and open to the public.

About the Exhibition:

Through the work Anne Leighton Massoni, Libby Rowe, and Kris Sanford, this exhibition explores the creation of identity utilizing appropriated familial and found imagery. Massoni, Rowe and Sanford each balance between voyerism and intimacy by the exploration and utilization of found imagery, a curiosity of lives lived and a zeal for story telling. Each artist works at making something new from something found, taking something discarded and nearly lost and creating story anew.

Massoni’s series Holding, utilizes created images and found photographs to present a place between truth and fiction. These contrasting images sit side by side with a thin line painted across their surface, drawing imagined connections. Massoni is interested in the intangibility of this middle ground, she is searching for that which we experience and cannot express – evidence of memory, evidence of experience, evidence of existence.

In (sub)Division, Rowe seeks to question societal identity through the exploration of the preconceived and perceived intimacy of “the neighborhood”. Rowe is interested in notions of what home life looks like, how different families relate within the confines of their home and how this construct of intimacy defines its members. (sub)Division is an installation of found imagery built into three dimensional house structures set in a double-ended cul-de-sac.

Relationships, real or imagined, are at the center of Kris Sanford’s work. In Between the Lines, a 1954 diary that belonged to a grandfather she never met serves as the inspiration and visual background. Her images are works of fiction. The individuals pictured serve as characters in a search to uncover lost stories of life, family, and love.

About the Exhibition:

The ideation of home is in a shift from what has been the American dream to a new, unordered attempt at finding comfort within a new set of boundaries, be that physiological, physical or an invented sense of home. Lindsay Palmer and Casey McGuire both construct installations that approach the surface of what is and could be this new sense of hybridity with in the home. Human modes of survival that cause change and adaption are addressed in found materials, like fabric, roadside detritus and cardboard. Temporal materials that embody the adaption and change of home, gender and landform boundaries are the basis for how both artists sees similarities in their translation of changes in our world.

Seeing is Believing; Transient Spaces for Home, is the manifestation of constructed narrative spaces that embody the changing atmosphere of associations with the domestic. Seeing is Believing, is an intersection between what is real, was history, memory and is now, current and constructed. Dislocations of home, and objects that are constructions question the hybridization of what is home and how the installations in Seeing is Believing; transient space for home will address changes in our cultural, familial structures.
