Art History

The Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Criticism is the only art history degree available at a public university in San Antonio. In addition to traditional European studies, the faculty’s specialization in Art of the Americas makes this program attractive to students in culturally diverse San Antonio as well as to those from other parts of the country who wish to take advantage of our geographical proximity to the border with Mexico and beyond. Our emphasis on contemporary art will appeal to many San Antonio residents who are interested in studying national and international developments reflected in the flourishing local art scene.

The BA in Art History prepares graduates in a field of importance to the city of San Antonio and fosters opportunities for practical work experience through internships at museums and galleries. With a strong liberal arts background, graduates will also be suited for careers in fields in which research, critical thinking, writing and computer skills are required.

A minor in art history is also available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Art (BA) and the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree.The discipline of the history of art addresses cultural, historical, and critical issues through the visual arts. A Minor in Art History and Criticism provides students with a general overview of the discipline. All students pursuing the Minor in Art History and Criticism must complete 18 semester credit hours.
